Swap fear for Joy 😍

Say No and experience the Joy of Missing Out

I had total FOMO whilst actually ON holiday. I know….

I was on holiday in Greece about 20 years ago. But I wasn’t at all focused on enjoying the day out. I was feeling left out from one of our gangs usual Friday nights out at home in London. I had total FOMO: the fear of missing out.

The fear that if I wasn’t included that I would somehow be disadvantaged or lose. And ironically many of our nights out were uneventful.

And the same often happens to us in work. As experts or managers we feel we have to be included if something remotely involves us.

Not any more.

Like most of us I spent my 20s and 30s making sure I was at the latest bar, restaurant or being at the latest gathering or watching the latest show. I felt like if I wasn’t there I wasn’t considered important or I was excluded in some way.

No more.

Being at everything is no longer something I desire. These days I am more about the JOMO: the JOY of missing out. Not the fear.

JOMO, YUP. It's a thing.

Enjoying missing out on the things that zap my energy and time.

The joy of missing out on routine gatherings that are not beneficial or valuable.

In a culture where we are made to think more is more, less is way more productive and empowering for me.

How can you JOMO your life?
Say NO to meetings that you don’t need to be at or can’t contribute to.
Say NO to meaningless calls and Zooms.
Say NO to the low-level stuff that drags you down.

Forced fun after work. NO

Routine family stuff that is not serving you. NO.

Those "Guilt Dinners" with friends who you longer like or respect. NO

Saying NO to the things that don’t bring you energy is a significant way to make your day, week more enjoyable and productive.

Say NO to energy vampires that drain you. (More on these soon!!)

Saying no can bring you endless joy
Just think of all the things you can do or achieve with the time you get back when you say no. Or all the contemplation or simply nothing you can do with the luxury of time back.

Warren Buffet once said that "The difference between successful people and really successful people is that really successful people say no to almost everything". That's JOMO!!

Once you start. You will see the benefits instantly.
