Stop dreaming. Start growing.

Accept. Plan. Grow.

If we don't reflect on our ways or current situation then we can't evolve or change. It's pretty obvious really: if you don't know where you are now how do you know what you need to do to move.

Accept: find your place
Knowing and accepting where we stand now is the first part of moving forward. In order to move past where we are we must first accept and lay a mark at our current place. Then we can map out a direction for the new place.

The Ladder of Impact (below) is one way for you to gauge where you are now and plan your destination. It's a metaphor for lifting your impact and capability.

I use a ladder because your capabiliy is like a roof: it can limit or lift your results. So when we climb the ladder we grow our capability and we move up. Our impact, confidence and results also grow.

Plan: identify steps to take
I am working with a bunch of 20 leaders at the moment. Each of them have decided where they are on the ladder and have made an action plan that will lift them up the next few rungs to success. It's a leveller for the group and really useful way to discuss capability and improvement.

Each month we work through actions and discuss insights and feedback to help them climb higher. Or to stay focused and hold on :)

Without a plan we might fall right off the ladder or we are not able to plot our success. It leaves us open to loss of focus, procrastination and failure. When we dont have "anything to go by" we end up wandering and getting lost.

Building a plan and sharing it takes your hopes of success from dreaming (less than 40%) to almost reality (more than 70%). If you want growth you have to do more than dream.

Grow: take action and get better
If you don't plan your evolution then you can't tell if you are evolving or not. You have no start, no progress and no finish line. And this is where most leaders tend to find themselves. They are wandering about trying new things without a dedicated focus or goal to get up the ladder. So they never feel like they are getting better. Consequently their results don't spike up and sometimes they plateau.

Evolution involves regular small steps in a desired direction. Its not a revolution. And its not about dreaming or wishing for a better outcome.It takes time, focus and energy. But its worth it.
